COUNCILS

Why the need for a ‘People’s Council’?

We’ve recently witnessed a growing trend for elected Councils to move away from democratic values and become a ‘law unto themselves’, prepared to push and implement developmental and socially impactful policies without adequately consulting and respecting the feedback of the community they supposedly represent and serve.

We witnessed an instance of this recently with the Normanville Foreshore development, to which there was (according to one independent survey) clearly majority opposition from the community. Yet the Council forged ahead with it anyway, wasting millions of ratepayers’ dollars on destroying a wonderful, family-friendly Foreshore complete with shady trees, creative art, lawn and a lovely kiosk cafe - and replacing them with a dull development that offers no improvement on what was already more than adequate to the community’s wants and needs.

Now, Yankalilla Council is putting forward restrictive policy guidelines based on a questionable ‘climate crisis’ narrative, again without adequately arguing their case, or consulting the community. We simply cannot and must not tolerate this gradual erosion of our right to be heard, our privacy, our cherished community venues, our freedom of movement, and Council’s attempt to avoid their obligation to justify restrictive policies based on an alleged ‘climate crisis’, concerning which there is no scientific consensus.

Here we welcome you, the community, to a friendly space that seeks to represent and safeguard your threatened democratic freedoms. In the interests of fairness, accountability and transparency, as a community-oriented People’s Council we offer reputable Links to data and scientific facts regarding ‘climate change’ that Yankalilla Council conveniently ignores, so that you can do your own ‘re-search’ and make up your own minds.

Above all, we are here for you, the community. Once you have perused the material here, feel free to offer us your feedback, questions and additional concerns. If we work together to protect our civil rights, right to privacy and freedom of movement, we can ’stop the rot’ of Councils operating undemocratically behind close doors. Remember: we are many, they are few and in any true democracy, power belongs to us, the People. Let’s join forces and make that vision a reality once more.
